Barbara Jean "B.J." (Smith) Walker
I have spent most of my adult life as an educator, so I shudder with the remembrance of how mean we were to teachers and how proud we were if that teacher quit or moved away. I remember specific incidences such as dead cats being hung from doorways, but I will NEVER tell names. I remember how talented our class was in athletics and music, although it seems to me, that some of our class was not allowed to participate in fall sports because of a spring fling with beer.
Do you remember dragging Main, the infamous girl slumber parties at Carolyn's, or our senior trip to Coors? Did you take Physics from Mr. Grant who was always called away during our class? Did you take bookkeeping in the basement? Do you remember spending hours decorating for school dances? Or do you remember BIG events like Julesburg getting a roller rink, a drive-in theater and a drive-in restaurant?

I remember the county fair parades. I remember yelling myself silly at basketball and football games, roller skating until I was bruised at the rink, giggling ad nausium and crying my eyes out at graduation.

I remember learning to water ski (after several attempts), playing in the band, singing in the chorus and going to State FHA at Fort Collins. I remember a class of people who had fun but I can't remember us being very serious about our studies.

For some reason, I also remember Larry Silverburg singing a solo on stage in the auditorium and I can almost remember what he sang. I remember Carolyn being the super typist that allowed us to have a yearbook.
I remember Larry, Jim Dennis and Carolyn being band superstars.

And, who could forget Miss Rubber Body - Carol - and her backbends, splits, high jumps and other cheerleader feats.

I remember the old manual typewriters, the FFA guys and the word “boys” engraved in stone on that end of the building and “girls” engraved in stone on the home economics end. I remember Irene and how skillful she was in home economics. I also remember how envious we were of her because she gotto drive to school. (Never mind that she lived 21 miles out of town.

On a personal note, I completed my 35th year of teaching this spring.. I have taught in Denver, Durango and Ignacio.

My husband, Glen, has worked at several types of jobs, but now is owner of a True Value Hardware store in Ignacio with our son Chris. Greg’s 26th birthday was February 23rd. I don’t suppose you actually grow older in heaven - so he is still 23.

We have had foreign exchange students from Spain, Brazil and Japan so our house has never been empty. Two years ago Glen and I traveled to Spain to visit Eduardo, one of our exchange students; and a few years ago I spent 2 1/2 weeks in China on a cultural exchange.

My brother, Dick, (Class of 1962) is in Farmington, New Mexico. My mother is still living, but you may remember that my Dad died while we were in high school.

My brother, Ed (Class of 1957), died of cancer April 21, 1999. It was the second time he had cancer and it was very aggressive. He was working on a Tuesday, in the hospital by Friday and died the following Tuesday.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) Dick moved in with Ed that first Tuesday as he just returned to Denver and was looking for a place to live.

My favorite pastimes are reading, gardening and skiing.
