History of Surinam:
The original inhabitants of the country were the native minority's:
On the coast Carib tribes and in the land Arawakian tribes.
Interior tropical forest tribes such as the
Macushi and Trio also survived in relative isolation.
The less populated, muddy coastline failed to attract the Westerners in search of gold,
though they made occasional slave raids. The English established sugar and tobacco
plantations on the west bank of the Surinam River around 1650 and they made the settlement
now known as the capital Paramaribo. Because of forbidden slavery, there were not enough land workers in
the early 19th century, and contract workers were brought in from India, Indonesia and
China.
Despite limited autonomy, Surinam remained a colony until 1954, when it became a
self-governing state; another 20 years passed before it gained independence.
