Ann Behague c. 1908Grandad (Eric John Behague Wakefield) always told us his strange middle name was French and it soon came to light that it was his own grandmother's maiden name. Family legend was that it was a Huguenot name and although I haven't been able to link our Behagues directly with them there were many Huguenot colonies in the Huntingdon area and the name does appear in various forms - Behag, Beehag, Beharg etc.

I have been unable to locate either Ann's birth or baptism but she would have been born c. 1837 from information given on census returns. In 1851 she is noted as aged 14, living in Earith with her family, although the surname is spelt Behayne on the return.

Ann married James Wakefield in 1860 at St Margaret's church, Westminster. Both James and Ann are noted on their marriage certificate as resident at St. Catherine's St, London at the time. It is not clear why they were in London or why they chose to marry there. One reason could be that as they were cousins and it was in fact illegal to marry your cousin at this time, they may have decided to elope or at least marry where the vicar wouldn't know their family background. Ann and James must have returned to Cambridgeshire fairly shortly after their marriage as their first child Eliza (1863) and all subsequent children were born and/or baptised in Sawston.

Sometime in the early 1900s James and Ann decided to move to Linton and they both ended their days there. Ann died on 22 April 1910.
