James was the eldest son of William and Sarah. Born in 1835 he was one of 8 children.

James moved to the nearby parish of Sawston from Whittlesford after his marriage in 1860 and according to census returns and his marriage certificate James' working life was centered around the Skin Trade which was prevalent in the village at the time. His occupations are listed as Fell Monger; Leather Dresser; Skinner; Grounder; Chamois Leather Finisher and Stunner.

The census also tracks the family as they moved from Morley's Yard to Orchard Road and then on to the High Street.

Morley's Yard was on the left of the High Street, when coming from the parish of Stapleford. It was almost opposite the current post office. My mother Margaret also remembers it being there when she was a girl. It was one of the last of the roads that was basically a dirt track and she thinks she went to play with a friend there. There is a fairly new block of shops around the area now that is called Morley's Place. Grandad (Eric Wakefield) was heard to remark that he remembered Morley's Yard from his boyhood and it was a "bloomin rough" area!

James died aged 81.
