Krystal: Living her dream every day

Krystal, the first artist on BSB's label, shows that small town girls can sing with the big boys

The first time Kevin Richardson of Backstreet Boys watched a tape of Krystal performing her very first concert, it brought tears to his eyes. "I hope he doesn't mind me telling you this, but I guess he just felt like a proud papa," explains Jonathan "Mook" Morant, Krystal's manager/producer.

BSB have every right to take pride in the success of their 19-year-old protége Her rich voice, talent as musician (she plays piano, guitar, and flute) and music-writing abilities (she co-wrote almost every song on her debut album Me and My Piano), made her a no-brainer as the first artist to be signed to the Boys' label.

But Krystal counts her blessings for having the Boys put her on the music map. "They sold like a hundred trillion million albums!" she marvels. "It was a privilege for me to be a part of their new label and to be on their tour."

The Boys have truly welcomed her into their all-male fold, teaching her how to bowl (a fave AJ pastime) and playing concert pranks on her (dousing her with bottled water!).

With her first single "Supergirl" on The Princess Diaries soundtrack, Krystal taps into her living-a-dream theme. "I think of myself as kind of a nerd, and Clark Kent was a nerd," she explains, "but the point fo the song is everybody has a Supergirl inside."

Is Krystal Kevin's younger cousin?

Even though Kevin overlooks Krystal's rising musical career, he isn't her cousin. Here's how they met. A couple of years ago, Kevin's producer pal Jonathan "Mook" Morant discovered Krystal in her home state of Indiana. Mook told Kevin about her immense talent, and he was intrigued.

Before she knew it, Krystal became the first artist on BSB's new label. And they even chose her to be their opening act on their tour. Even though she's not really related to any of the guys, Krystal says they're like her big brothers. "It's like a family on tour, I'm their little sis," she says. What a lucky girl!
