Born To Be A Drummer

Samantha Maloney was born on December 11, 1975 in Manhattan, New York. Soon after, her family moved to Queens and then Rego Park. Sam had two younger siblings; little sister, Kristy, and little brother, Bobby. When Sam was four years old she received her very first guitar for Christmas. A year later, she was given her first little drumkit. While she was in the 4th grade, Sam joined the school chess club and played organized baseball. She was very much into sports, but music became a big interest when she was introduced to the new wave of metal/hard rock while sitting on a stoop in Queens with a few of her friends. She was fourteen years old, and Gun's N' Roses was the band that inspired her. After hearing Guns N' Roses, Sam picked up the drums and to this day, it is her life.
Sam attended the High School of Performance Arts, aka "Fame", and majored in percussion. But Sam's interest in sports held on to her as she was the star of the girl's basketball team. But in 1993, Sam gave up a career in basketball to play drums with Shift, an all boy-band, except for Sam, of course. Shift's first record released in 1994, and the band started to gain popularity. The band signed with Columbia Records and began touring with the likes of Foo Fighters, The Crypt, Our Lady Peace, and Rocket. While all this was going on, Sam was studying music and taking urban studies at New York's Hunter College. Three years later, Shift collapsed, and Sam was forced to search for another job.....or another career.
In 1998, through a mutual friend, she got a call that Hole needed a drummer. Sam went to audition and her career was saved! She was the replacement of Hole's former drummer, Patty Schemel. Sam toured with Hole for 2 years.
In 2000, Sam was asked by Motley Crue to fill in for Randy Castillo who, at the time, was very ill. Sam gladly accepted her "dream come true", and Motley Crue had a drummer for their tour. Unfortunately, Randy Castillo died not too long after Sam joined up with Motley Crue. Though this was a tragic time for the members of Motley Crue, they needed a drummer, so they kept Sam. With the Motley Crue, Sam was able to appear on "Lewd, Crued, and Tattooed." Not long after the movie's release, she appeared in another film, called "Bounce; Behind the Velvet Rope", where her drumming, singing, and programming was featured.
In 2001, Sam moved to Los Angeles and in February, she made music for Darryl Hannah's documentary about a stripper called "Stripnotes". In May, she went out to the Joshua Tree Desert to work on the "Desert Session 7 and 8" CD with Josh from Queens Of The Stoneage and other westcoasters. At the same time, Sam was working on her own compositions and in June, she and Scott Ian from Anthrax were asked to write and record music for the Mr. Show movie "Run Ronnie Run", which later became "Titanica." During the time of "Titanica's" release, she was involved with Oscar winning composer Hans Zimmer on his score for the Ridley Scott film, "Black Hawk Down," in which she added live drums.
In 2002, Sam, along with Melissa Auf Der Maur (former bassist for Hole), Paz (A Perfect Circle), and Radio (The Need) created the new band, "The Chelsea", and the foursome debuted at Spaceland in Silverlake, California. Not long after the creation of "The Chelsea", Sam got a call stating that she would be writing and recording with a lineup of legends including, Stephen Trask (one of the two masterminds behind the muscial/movie "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"), Sara Lee (legendary bassist from Gang of Four), The B-52's, The Indigo Girls, and Joan Jett. The lead actress, Gina Gershon, was to sing the lead vocals. Sam left "The Chelsea" (which then split up) and went to record with the legends. After rehearsing in New York City, Sam once again teamed up with the Motley Crue record tracks in upstate New York for the soon to be released film, "Prey for Rock and Roll."
As of now, Sam is running her very own website and is working on some solo projects. She has also created her own company called "Drumsexy".
