The Little Girl
She sits and hugs her knee’s
She gently rocks herself
To sooth the pain
She sits alone on the cold dirty steps
The steps to her house
She gently rocker herself
To sooth the pain
As she wipes away a tear
Her head is racing of memories
Watching movies, staying up late
Jump rope, walks in the park
All these she did with the person she loved
Her mother
She gently rocks herself
To sooth the pain
The pain her mother once soothed
With the gentle words of “I love you”
As someone walks past, she keeps her eyes down
She pretends to be nothing
Just like her mother told her
The gray clouds roll in, the rain dances on the steps
The girl gets up to walk inside
She turns the doorknob
Locked
In her skirt and shoes, she zips up her spring coat
She gently rocks herself
To sooth the pain
Images flash through her head
The screaming, the anger, the hitting
Of all her mother did
Her teeth clatter in the cold
Her tears run down her face with the rain
She mainly wonders when mommy will return
She remembers as she peeked out the door that night
Mommy had a needle in her hand
Mommy was shooting something into her
Mommy saw her, and mommy threw a rage
The little girl closes her eyes, to hide the images
She gently rocks herself
To sooth the pain
The little girl lifts up her sleeve, and looks at the bruise
She gently rocks herself
To sooth the pain
She gently rocks herself
To sleep…..
