red, white, and blue aren't for mourning

right now, there are a ton of people walking around with little red, white, and blue ribbons on to mourn the deaths of the people killed in the terrorist attacks last week. why? now, i don't mean, why are they mourning. i myself am mourning the loss of those souls, but i mean, why are they wearing red, white, and blue ribbons? last time i checked, black was the color of mourning. and no, that is not my lil goth soul speaking there. black is simply the color that most people wear to show that they are mourning. so, why is it that the whole fuckin country has suddenly decided to wear those hideously colored ribbons? i have been told by patriotic ninnies that they are wearing red, white, and blue ribbons to not only mourn the deaths but also to support this country in her time of need. as a matter of fact, a girl at work had red, white, and blue ribbons to hand out to us all. don't get me wrong. i appreciate the gesture. it was thoughtful, yes, but well thought out, no.

why should i support this country? "because you are free" wrong. i am not. i am neither white nor male. so therefore i am not free. my native american ancestors were fucked over in a most horrendous fashion, and despite some people's thoughts to the contrary, these things and almost worse are still going on today. as a woman, i am thought of only as an extension of a man, no matter what the laws might say. i will still come up second to a man in any decision. i am not christian, therefore according to the people we have running the show now, i am unimportant in any matter. and finally, let us not forget that i am a lesbian. my community is constantly being terrorized. young men and women are killed and harrassed everyday, and this so-called "wonderful democracy" staunchly refuses to pass any laws that protect us because of the religious morons i mentioned in passing before. so remind me again why i should support this country. tell me i should be proud to live in this nation. go ahead. if you can convince me in spite of all that i have said, i will paper my house in star-spangled banner. and if not, pass me the roll of black ribbon.

...thus spake the munkies and it was good.
