Seven-year-old Eric Matthews stood by an Oak tree, in his yard, as his dad got out of the car. He smiled at him and was going to start running towards him when his mother came out of the house.

"You were suppossed to be here an hour ago!," his mother exclaimed.

His dad shrugged, "I got here as soon as I could."

"Well, where are you guys going?"

"Well, we can't really go anywhere. I just came to say hi, I have to be somewhere."

"Somewhere more important than your son?!"

His dad sighed, "I have to go." He turned and walked to his car, without even acknowledging Eric.

"Dad! I love you!, " Eric cried out. His father just started the car and drove off. Eric turned to his mother, with tears running down his face. "Why dosn't dad love me?"

His mother had tears in her eyes, "I'm sure he does love you."

Twelve years had passed and Eric had only seen his dad twice. He had gotten the nickname Two-Bit, by his friends, because he could steal anything without getting caught.

He went home and his mom said, "Honey. Come in the kitchen." When he got there, he saw her sitting at their little kitchen table and asked, "What's up, mom?"

She sighed, "I got a call this morning. Your father was killed in a drunk driving accident."

Eric sat down on a chair and frowned. He had never found out if his father loved him. 'Guess I never will, ' he thought to himself.

His mother hugged him and said, "The funeral will be in a couple of days. If you want to go, I'll go with you."

Eric silently nodded.

Two Days Later

Eric and his mother walked into the church and sat down in the back. Eric looked around and didn't see very many people in attendance. 'Not surprising, 'thought Eric. The choir sang "Amazing Grace" after the minister had prayed. When the choir was finishing up, Eric got up out of his seat and walked up to the casket. He looked down at the man that he had wanted to know and couldn't stop the bitterness that rose up. But, on the other hand, the little boy that still wanted his father's love, died inside. He looked up at the wall and saw the statue of Jesus on the cross, with his arms spread open. Eric knew he wasn't alone as he walked back to the pew where his mother was. He bowed his head, after he had sat down, and for the first time since he was seven, he cried.

He can't remember
The times that he thought
Does my daddy love me?
Probably not
That didn't stop him
From wishing that he did
Didn't keep him from wanting
Or worshipping him

He guesses he saw him
About once a year
He could still feel the way he felt
Standing in tears
Stretching his arms out
As far as they'd go
Whispering dad
I want you to know

[Chorus:]
I love you this much
And i'm waiting on you
To make up your mind
Do you love me too?
How ever long it takes
I'm never giving up no matter what
I love you this much

He grew to hate him for what he had done
'cause what kind of father
Could do that to his son?
He said 'damn you daddy'
The day that he died
The man didn't blink
But the little boy cried

[Chorus:]
I love you this much
And i'm waiting on you
To make up your mind
Do you love me too?
How ever long it takes
I'm never giving up no matter what
I love you this much

Half way through the service
While the whoir sang a hymn
He looked up a the preacher
And he sat and stared at him

He said
'forgive me father'
When he realized
That he hadn't been unloved
Or alone all his life
His arms were stretched out
As far as they go
Nailed to the cross
For the whole world to know

[Chorus:]
I love you this much
And i'm waiting on you
To make up your mind
Do you love me too?
How ever long it takes
I'm never giving up no matter what
I love you this much
