Character Sketching

When writing, the pictures you have in your head may not be as clear as you originally thought. That's why sketching the characters (or places) from your novel is a useful technique to use in your writing. It can help you clarify scences and people in your stories, making your writing far more interesting and well rounded.

Consider this: What is the name of your character? What do they look like? What distinguishing characteristics do they have? It is all too easy to create boring, one dimensional characters in writing. But details are important! Your characters have to seem real, individual and believable. This is where sketching comes in.

Take a look at the pictures below:

Here is your task. Using the above pictures, write a fairly long paragraph describing them. Tell us who they are and describe how they look. Then go on to talk about their personality, their likes and dislikes, even their favourite foods! Remember, characters have more than one side to them. They have physical traits, emotional traits, etc. When you are finished, read over your paragraphs. This is how your characters in your writing should appear: well-rounded individuals!

Remember! Characters should have four sides:
· General - traits formed by heredity and environment
· Physical - the person's physical traits
· Emotional - the mental or psychological traits
· Personal - the social or ethical traits

Makes sure you cover these three aspect in your character descriptions. This is how you should prepare your characters for any stories or novels that you might write! Also, try using the layout provided below to flesh out your characters. They should seem real!
