This is a sort of funny picture of a deadly weapon. This was one of the garrison's most hated weapons besides the trebuchet. A battering ram was well protected, could be transportated quickly and easily, and smash down the gates so that the attackers could get in. The ramming arm should be made out of a strong tree trunk and hung from chains so that it could be squng back and forth rather than held. Sometimes, the ram would be tipped with an iron spike or large, blunt head to maximize the smashing power. But the hook and rod method of tipping over belfries could also turn a large and powerful battering ram into a silly, helpless piece of junk.
