Shocking Story: Chi Tau

Matthew Carrington, a 21-year-old student, pledging chi tau fraternity, died as a result of water intoxication and hypothermia. His brothers forced him and another one of his pledge-mates to drink water from a five-gallon bottle in nothing but jeans and socks in a cold basement of the fraternity house. When they were no longer able to drink the water, they had to pour it all over themselves and do pushups until they couldn't do anymore. Eventually, Matthew couldn't do anymore and collapsed. This story had an odd ending, though, because the men who were accused with his death pled guilty to the charges against them. Most hazers would have instead pleaded their innocence until the end. The problem is that no nationally recognized Greek organization condones hazing. So, if any hazing is done, it is done without the national headquarters knowing about it. Therefore, if by chance something tragic does happen, the organization is going to do everything within its power to deny it and make it not look like it was hazing at all. These boys, however, took responsibility for their actions.
