Newton's first law: an object will remain in a state of rest or continue in motion with the same speed and the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced external force.
This animation shows a passenger without a seatbelt. The passenger does not share the state of motion of the vehicle; therefore, the passenger maintains its state of motion and keeps going forward.
