Acceleration of a cart

Purpose:
To measure the acceleration of a moving object and to graphically analyze its motion.

Materials:
- cart
- ticker tape
- ticker tape timer
- ruler
- incline

Procedure:
1. Attach the paper tape to the cart, then thread it through the timer beneath the carbon paper.
2. Turn the timer on and roll the cart down the incline for 1-3 s or 1-2 m.
3. Record the markings as described for distance (cm) and time (0.1 s) on a data table. Approximately six consecutive dots make up for 0.1s. Avoid the beginning and end of the tape.
4. Plot an accurate distance vs. time graph. Calculate the slope.
5. Plot a velocity vs. time graph. Calculate the slope.
