Passing by Trafalgar Square and the NATIONAL MUSEUM

RAY: “That looks like a FAT GUY with BREASTS and NO ARMS!
They call that ART?”

The monument erected where the GREAT FIRE of 1666 began.
The “tallest free-standing
sculpture in London.”

“By the end of the fire some four fifths of the City
had been destroyed, approximately 13,200 houses,
87 churches and 50 Livery Halls over an area of
436 acres. Although the fire only claimed a few lives
it may actually have saved many more – the rats
that had helped to transmit the bubonic plague
(the “Black Death) the previous year mostly
died in the fire. The number of plague victims dropped
rapidly after the fire.”

“The Great Fire of London set in motion changes in the
capital which laid the foundations for organized
firefighting in the future. Wooden houses and designs
dating back to the medieval period were replaced with
brick and stone buildings and owners began to insure
their properties against fire damage. The new insurance
companies quickly realized that their losses could be
minimized by employing men to put out fires.”

Driving over the “NEW” LONDON BRIDGE, looking at the TOWER BRIDGE

The Original LONDON BRIDGE (sans the BUILDINGS that once were on it)

is in LAKE HAVASU, ARIZONA!!! Too weird.

Turning to DRIVE OVER TOWER BRIDGE …
where we could take these pix of

the “LONDON BULLET” and another “MODERN” building.

Once we reached the other side of the Tower Bridge, we enjoyed
viewing the TOWER OF LONDON!

NO “non-professional” pix can come CLOSE to adequately representing the
incredible size and majesty of the TOWER OF LONDON’s complex!
And, I STILL haven’t managed to VISIT IT!!! I could just SPIT!

From my 2002 UK TRIP PIX (When I walked AROUND the Tower’s complex.):

Traitor’s Gate” is at the “FRONT”
of the Tower (accessed via the “moat” on
the River Thames side of the fortress).

Traditionally, prisoners were brought in by boat.

It’s really eerie to look down at it … imagining what it must have been like to enter there.

In 2002 I took a Mini-Vid o’ the building and posted it to a webpage.
WARNING! The Mini-Vid takes a LONG time to download!
But, if you’re patient, it’s pretty KOOL – even though its really SHORT!

This is a “marriage” of TWO pix I took in 2002, of the BACK of the London Tower,
as I returned to the Pub where Susan was waiting (and swilling ale).

Go To the “Unofficial” Tower Web Site
or, The “Official” Tower Web Site
if you want to check it out!

“CLEOPATRA’S NEEDLE”

“The OLDEST ARTIFACT
outside of the BRITISH MUSEUM.”

“This obelisk is known as Cleopatra's Needle
… though it has very little to do with Cleopatra.

It was made in Egypt for the Pharaoh Thotmes III
in 1460 BC, making it almost 3,500 years old. It is
known as Cleopatra's Needle because it was brought
to London from Alexandria – Cleopatra’s royal city.

But how did it come to be beside the Thames?

It seems Britain wanted something big and noticeable
to commemorate the British victory over Napoleon,
which occurred 63 years earlier than the needle’s arrival.
The Needle was installed in 1878,
after a horrendous journey by sea from Egypt.

The school used for filming the HARRY POTTER FILMS!
Now THAT’s what I call a LANDMARK! LOL
