coffee at a café, we headed back out … turned a corner to amble down an alley … and THERE was the PERIMETER Entrance Gate [“Christ Church Gateway”] to the Canterbury Cathedral complex! |
The Canterbury Cathedral is entirely surrounded by a “PERIMETER” formed by
blocks and blocks of STRUCTURES (houses and the like) that are connected,
having absolutely NO SPACE between them.
So, although it isn’t enclosed by a “wall” per se, it is certainly ENCLOSED.
“Christ Church Gateway” is the only public entrance to the Cathedral’s area.

The ORIGINAL Canterbury Cathedral bitz were built in 602 ad.
Most of those bitz (and the bitz constructed during the immediately ensuing years) were
damaged by a DANE invasion in 1011, then utterly destroyed by a fire in 1067.
Between 1070 and 1077, the Canterbury Cathedral was significantly rebuilt.
Several Cathedral pieces/parts have been newly built, damaged or destroyed
(by fires or wars), rebuilt and/or restored … and ADDED TO since then.
Suffice it to say that, the Canterbury Cathedral is INCREDIBLY old and HISTORIC.
