CHAS’ & RUBY’S
2006 UK TOUR
Sunday, June 4th:

Chas pix o’ the
EARL of ROSSLYN
TOMB

Francis Robert
StClair Erskine,
the 4th Earl of Rosslyn,
was the last
Grand Master
of the
Grand Lodge of Antient,
Free and Accepted
Masons of Scotland

to be buried at
Rosslyn Chapel!

“In 1880-1, Francis Robert, 4th Earl of Rosslyn, added the apse to serve as a baptistry with an organ loft above. ... The Earl also filled the baptistry arch with the handsome oak tracery which you see today, decorated with his crest. Together with the two Chapel doors, this is the only wood used in the construction of [Rosslyn Chapel].”

That blackened segment beneath the cross atop the tomb

is the Earl of Rosslyn’s HERALDIC ARMS

Born on the 2nd of March, 1833, the 4th Earl of Rosslyn,
died on the 6th of September, 1890.

In November of 1866, Rosslyn married Blanche Adeliza Fitzroy.
(What a lovely French & Scots name!) They had five children.

I Googled and searched, and searched and Googled!
But, I couldn’t find
any information
about the
INSCRIPTION
that is carved along
the east & west sections
of the little wall
that encloses
the gravel
in front of
this elaborate tomb!

Ah! Part of a RUBY pic!

There are two verses of poetry – one verse along each side section.
I don’t know who the author is.
I cannot tell which is the “first” verse, and which is the “second” verse!

SO! I’ll just start with THIS one:

Not stone or brass …

These perish with the flight

of Time And quickly pass

But Love endures

in every clime …

Eternal as the Poet’s rhyme

Here is the other verse:

Not brass or stone. These will corrode …

and some day die. But Love alone …

Laughs at decay and soars on high …

To fragrant immortality

ALTOGETHER, here are the two verses!

Not stone or brass.
These perish with the flight of time and quickly pass.
But love endures in every clime,
Eternal as the poet’s rhyme.

Not brass or stone.
These will corrode and some day die.
But love alone laughs at decay,
And soars on high to fragrant immortality.

I think those verses are toooo Kool!
Perhaps some day I’ll visit Rosslyn Chapel when the SHOP is open,
and learn more about this tomb’s interesting inscription.
