THE SANDERS FAMILY PHOTO ALBUM

George Frederick Sanders (Grandpa) was born in Cardiff in 1875 the son of Robert Sanders, shipwright, & Mary Ann Sanders (nee Short). He went to sea as a boy but I understandthat an accident stopped him from continuing at sea. When he married Lily Burfitt the couple set up in business as Coal Merchants in Cardiff, which business continued in operation until the 1970s as G.F.Sanders & Son. George was a stalwart member of Loudon Square English Wesleyan Methodist Chapel all his adult life and was Sunday School Superintendent for many years. The booklet “ A History of Methodism in the Cardiff Docks Area” describes him as being “recalled as a very impressive man with a good strong voice for singing and maintaining order. He always carried a ‘bottomless’ bag of sweets which were generously given away at the end of the Sunday School”. Lily Sanders (nee Burfitt) (Gran) was the daughter of George Burfitt, greengrocer, tug boat owner etc and his wife Margaret (nee Evan) (the subject of the first photo on page 1). George Frederick died in 1954 and was cremated at Thornhill Crematorium, Cardiff, Lily died in 1967 and she too was cremated at Thornhill.

Gran & Grandpa Sanders: This photograph was taken on holiday in the Isle of Wight in 1949.

A nice picture of our paternal grandmother taken in 1925 shortly after Barbara’s birth. Gran died in 1967.
