PART 3
FREDERICK WILLIAM PALING ALIAS FULLER (1854 - 1924)
Frederick William Paling was born at Boston, Lincs. on 28 February 1854, the eldest son of Elijah Paling and his wife Mary Ann (nee Cross). His father died in August 1860 and in the 1861 Census Frederick and his younger brother Walter were both with their mother in Spalding, Lincs. Walter next turns up in Scarborough, Yorks. in 1879 when he married. For over 30 years I searched for Frederick. There was a family story that he had gone to live with his paternal grandparents in Weston, Lincs. and had never been seen again by his brother Walter as their mother did not get on with the grandparents. A couple of years ago, however, I was contacted by e-mail within the space of a month and quite independently by two different descendants of Frederick ! The mystery was solved. Frederick had joined the army under an assumed name (Fuller), been posted to India, married there, and gone to New Zealand where he stayed. He was a road surveyor and his wife a schoolteacher in Urenui. He died there in 1924. Whether he and his brother Walter did have any correspondence after their separation from each other I do not know, but they obviously never forgot each other since each named sons after the other - Frederick’s son was Walter Robert Fuller, Walter’s son was Frederick John Paling.
