1st Team Cup Results 1998

Despite victory in the King's League Trophy in 1997, the cups were to elude Garboldisham in 1998. They were unlucky to draw Vauxhall Mallards for the second successive season in the Carter Cup, and after being bowled out for only 96 by a particularly impressive performance by Steve Goldsmith in particular, Vauxhall finished with 100/4. In their first game against Mundford in the plate competition, rain intervened after Garboldisham were going comfortably, yet contreversially when they were on 99/2 and Richard Seaman given out in the bowler's 11th over - each bowler is only allowed 10 overs. The game was replayed, and Mundford put up a superb fielding performance - and Garboldisham a poor batting one - when they were dismissed for 62. Needless to say, Mundford got this comfortably for the loss of 1 wicket with a superb catch by John Moorhouse in an unusual role as wicket keeper! It was then to Norwich Union for the relegation round. The game started late due to rain, and it was 9pm before the end. Garboldisham had a poor start, finding themselves on 24/4. John Moorhouse was partly to recover this, but the tail end, in particular Joe Pontin, with 22*, were superb and the score of 130 looked tricky on a wet wicket. Norwich were probably too defensive, and in a close finish Garboldisham took the honors by 10 runs.

The Biss Trophy was where our best chances lay, but this was not to be fulfilled. During Brooke, of our own league, in the Trophy game, the team were perhaps disappointing when finishing on a laboured 135 with Neville Kemp top scoring with 29*. Brooke reached this easily, only loosing 3 wickets. We were put into the plate competition, with a deceptively easy draw with Rollesby from the Norfolk League. One of the best bowling performances of the season was put up by Joe Pontin, when taking 5 for 39. The total of 152 looked reachable, and the openers got off to a blistering start, getting 19 off the first 3 overs. Then the rain intervened, and Garboldisham never really got going. Ian Melvin got 52, the highest cup score of the season, but this was not enough to help his side as they collapsed around him. The defeat meant the end of the cup season for Garboldisham.
