The day started well for Garboldisham, captain Ian Melvin winning the toss and putting the home side into bat. Although they lost early wickets, Ian then steadied the innings with the only century of the season, an impeccable 113 off just 128 balls. He put on 60 with Richard Seaman, and 90 with Ernest Birch who scored a lucky 39, benefitting from poor fielding. Sid Cooper took late wickets for CEYMS, but the total of 230 looked invincible. The Garboldisham attack could not beat CEYMS's openers, Kevin Gutton and Brian Cunningham, but when Melvin again took two catches at first slip a win looked possible, Ernest Birch and Robert Crane bowling the next 20 overs for just 40 runs. The chances came too late, and despite Charlie Worby's 3 late wickets and Garboldisham's aggressive fielding, they could not prevent David Porter helping CEYMS save the draw with 49.
