Fan Interpretations
I am pretty sure I am very close on the
following interpretation. I think "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" is
about him being sick of where he's residing, at that moment, and feels the need
to get the fuck out. Whenever I read the lyrics I can relate so much to them it
scares me.... I live in a little shit hole full of 2-faced clowns. "This town don't feel mine",
he's saying how the town he's in doesn't fit him, isn't his style. "It
feels good to know your mine Now drive me far - away", there seems to be
one person he chills with, only one that he actually likes, and he wants them to
get him out of there before he goes nuts. "And I don't care where just FAR
- away" exactly how I feel.... I don't care where you take me, just get me
out of here. - Tyler
The guy in the song has kidnapped this woman and is
beginning to feel the pressure as the days go by. It isn't a situation he's
comfortable with and is starting to feel paranoid hence 'this town don't feel
mine'. He decides that he needs to get out as soon as possible and does this by
disguising his hostage in some other clothes, (possibly his mother's, something
like Norman Bates would do in the Psycho films). As the song progresses the guy
begins to calm down as he gets away from the town and realizing what he's done
he feels happy that he's gotten away with this woman and just bathes in his
glory 'it feels good to know you're mine'. What he does next is then left the listeners imagination. A disturbing song if
taken in this context, especially with the softer melody of the acoustic
version. - Chaz
The words, when they hit my ears, seem to carry a
sense of not feeling right somewhere, someone. Only the "away" can be
considered as what you are leaving behind hurts so much that you can't stay
despite what it means to you. You can't change people. you can't change yourself
coz that is how this situation has figured out. You've gotta find somewhere
where this won't happen again as the pain purifies and burns away all that the
relationship meant to you. There is still the memory that stays the same in your
mind, but the situation here on earth is so different that there is no other
viable alternative open to you. You could always try to change the person, but
then it wouldn't be them, it would be someone else, someone else with the same
clothes. It is completely pointless to do that , even though you think you might
be happy, coz then you'll have changed into something that carries different
emotions. And you'll have swapped lives with someone less than yourself - Siam
I know what other people say the song means but personally
I like to think of Chino as a serial killer or something of that kind
in this song. It's obvious that he wants to get out of the town with the line
"this Town don't feel mine..I'm fast to get away" he is fast to get
away from what? the cops...or he's fast to get away with his "gift"
his love..The line "I dressed you in her clothes" implies the whole obsessed serial killer thing I
mentioned before... The "her" is what he got away with..his special
person..his light at the end of his tunnel. And he doesn't care where he goes or
where he is as long as he's there with her. It's a twisted love song. -Devlin-
The acoustic version is better. its like chino has locked himself away, and is trying to sing from a kids perspective, like tripped in a room with his parents forcing him to be what he doesn't want to be and stuff. so he's just telling them to get the fuck out of his face and that he doesn't want to deal with their bullshit. it sounds better toned down, it actually sounds more aggressive in a way, cos the way he sings it sweetly kinda shows that he still loves his mum and dad, but is just asking for some space. chino is the best...its like every song he writes seems to have some relevance on my life. especially headup...I sing that song in my head when I get some shit from ppl who think I'm odd. - cantdancetodisco@aol.com
I think this song's about a huge lost love. Like he had a deep relationship with someone, then that person went left, through death or ending the relationship. Chino's was too in love, and is having trouble letting go but realizes that he needs to leave the places that remind him of that love. Now he's with someone new, even though he sees this new girl as a second chance with the other girl. The lines 'I dressed you in her clothes', 'it feels good to know you're all mine' then 'drive me far...away.' And obviously he doesn't care where they go. That's the what the song said to me. - JP Gosselin
I think the song "Be Quiet and Drive" off
of "Around the Fur," is about how one person can be in one town, and
completely loathe it. Hence "this town, don't feel much, I'm fast to
get away....far." This more than likely means how the people in one
place can be utterly two-faced and impersonal. (whereas, in another town,
the people can be compassionate and humble).
Amazing how a difference in sea level and geography can determine how you
turnout. The person would want to get away before the simple minds of the
impersonal people rub off, and destroy whatever honest qualities you may have. I
guess the rest of the song means, how getting away with someone that understands
you and escaping the crowd is better than leaving alone. JadedEyez@aol.com
This may not be what Be Quite
and Drive is about but this is what it means to me:
At points in my life time there's times where I just want to get away when I hear this song it up lifts me
a lot because I picture my gorgeous girlfriend
driving me places where I have wanted to go but really never motivated myself
and these places are where all of my problems are solved so my girlfriend
realizes im really weak on myself at this time and she knows I just wanna be as
far away as possible to reality but we just keep seeing the same thing over and
over because this road is just one big circle and there's no way out I turn
to my girlfriend and say it feels good to know your mine and she stops the car
and says is this far enough I say no she says OK and keeps driving and it all
ends as she drives off of a bridge we've seen for the 8th time we jump out
of the car and land in a lake we swim ashore and I know that this is far enough
as her mascara runs down her face and we kiss
----Ben from Sacto
P.S Chino thank you for getting me through the
hardest times of my life !!
okay, here are my ideas. I'm probably not right, but hey.... I think "be quiet and drive" is about , like everyone else says,
wanting to get away. it seems like chino's just saying he doesn't relate
to the people around him (hence "this town don't feel mine") and he
can't stand to stick around much longer. and the part about "I dressed you
in her clothes" isn't psycho at all, at least not to me. I think that
chino uses his lyrics sort of metaphorically and when he says that, he's talking
about leaving with this chick, and maybe it's not the one he wants to be with,
or should be with, but he's going with her anyway. just to get away with
someone. - deftones_chick@juno.com
Unlike everyone who thinks this song is about chino
getting away from his town, I think its about getting away emotionally...Chino
is not very literal in his songs...there's always an indirect meaning to it.
When he wrote this song I think Chino was going through a lot of emotion
problems and he was looking for someone he loved to take him away from his
problems emotionally...that's why I can relate to Chino's songs; he talks about
all the problems that teenagers go through and expresses all of his feelings
into songs like these. The acoustic version is better because he shows more his
true feelings....This is one of the most beautiful songs the deftones have
written (the acoustic version). If anyone is hoping through any emotional
stress, this is the song to listen to. -Angelo D.P.Crew
In my opinion, Chino was once again writing a song that teens can relate to. I
live in a little town of population 1500 last time i checked. It sucks and eventually you just want to get out of the place. Everyone does the craziest
shit just so they don't have to face the reality. Therefore this song appeals
to me strongly. It just helps. Also i think Chino is using the expression "the
grass is always greener on the other side" mostly in this song. If you have dreams and you live in a town that can't really grant them you just want to get
far away right? When I listen to the song i wonder if this is something Chino
went through as a kid or maybe he knew that lots of kids hate their hometown and
want to go to better places thinking that their greater, just so they can get
away from the shit. This is way this song rocks and I have total respect for
the greatest band...deftones. - popsucks21@hotmail.com
when i am just sitting back letting it all go and i can hear the words
flowing through me, when i look back at everything i've done, and hear this
song, it reminds me of a girl i had but lost due her wanting another guy . I
personally think it is about how he is with a girl that he cared so much
about, but it just doesn't start feeling right being with her, like every
second he spends with her, is another second in which he despises her, and
the only way he can get past the loathing is by painting a new image of her
in his mind, "i dress you up in her clothes", as though he merged this girl
in with the girl he actually loved so much that it hurts him to know he isn't
with her instead. "it feels good to know you are mine", by that i think he
is saying that knowing he has a girl, just any girl, makes him feel alive,
just the fact that he can say "she is mine" makes him feel better, the whole
"now drive me far away i don't care where just far", it makes an image in my
head, of some friends driving in a car and him saying just go anywhere, just
away from this place, away from her, away from everything he hates - Myshadow46and2@aol.com
Ive always had different feelings about this song. Not until tonight I figured
it out. Me and my best friend josh are going through some really tough shit.
We were both nearly close to fucking tears, until we said lets get the fuck
out of here. We live in the small college town of stephenville texas,
basically just a big shithole. We drove 20 miles outside city limits, and the
whole time I had chino's voice ringing in my head "I dont care where, just far
away". Picture this, just driving 80 miles an our in darkness watching your
hand float through the passing wind thinking about all the shit youve been
through. You have to get away sometimes, because shit can really fucking suck
sometimes. This song will now linger in my head whenever going through tough
shit, instead of going and getting all fucked up, Ill just drive far, far
away. -

Ok, my interpertation for the song Be Quiet and Drive is as follows: I agree
largely with what most people have said about Chino wanting to get away from
all this stuff in a town with the girl that he loves and that he just wants
to be with her, but i think that could just be a physical aspect of such a
brilliant song. i think Far Away could also be purely in Chino's head, like,
hes gone insane to escape the thoughts in his head, or the things he's
feeling, or something from his past, and he does it with a fictional
girl(which he has drawn referances from the real girl he loves, saying "i
dressed you in her clothes") he has created to be his perfect woman (thus
the line "it feels good to know your all mine")and when he states that he
doesnt care where hes going its because its all in his head and he knows his
mind will take him to his paradise. (if youve seen the movie Brazil you may
kinda have an idea what im talking about becuase the end runs along the same
lines)so thats what i think, i doubt its right but thats what the song means
to me, and thats why the deftones are such an amazing band, because they
touch people so deeply with thier music. thanx guys for being the best band
ever. - nigel
I think the song Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) is about being young and not
wanting to be in the same place for the rest of your life. I have heard
interpretations such as it is about chino kidnapping and killing someone, but
I can't see it. If you don' care where and you wanna be far away then this
is the song for you. It is interesting that the track after Be Quiet and
Drive ( Far away) is lotion where he says " I fell sick right here" so maybe
chino never really likes to be in one place. - lincer47@aol.com
"This town don't feel mine." It is obvious, blatant, and I haven't really related to this song until recently. My girlfriend of 2 years left me out of the blue for another guy. "I'm fast to get away." I totally feel that. There is nothing left here for me, I want to start over, but am unsure and a little insecure. "I dressed you in her clothes." To me, it's like being with someone, but wishing you were with someone else. Treating them the way you would treat the one you really want to be with; trying to make your fantasy a reality. "It feels good, to know you're mine." When I say that, I feel like I am lying to myself. I know she's not mine, but I am comforted by the thought of relating so closely to someone. "Drive me far, away." Again, I wouldn't look too deep into that. It is out in the open, so leave it alone. I want to run away from my problems and memories and experiences, and I don't want them to catch up with me. Ever. - Chirs Douglas
To me it seems to be about wanting to leave everything
behind and escape from all the shit in your life, but
at the same time not wanting to be alone. You could always use a sort of "Romeo and Juliet"
scenario where the guy and girl are trying to escape
their lives because of all the stress but still
knowing that they can only escape for a short period
of time until it all starts again. - macrae9@yahoo.com
I'm pretty sure this is what Be Quiet And Drive (Far
Away) is about. It's about him being in a town and he's
got this girl he loves but she won't come with him to
get out of this town, so he gets this other girl to
come with him and he wants her to be like the other
one hes in love with (I dressed you in her
clothes..)That way the girl could at least look like
her and since he can't have the one girl he really
wants. He doesnt care where he goes... just far. - Kendall
everyone's wrong, its not about him wanting to get out
of a town.the song is about kidnapping a girl.(shakes
head at the people who thought it was about him
wanting to get out of a town) osiris_boarder420@yahoo.com
