Abraham Alphonse Albert Gallatin

Abraham Alphonse Albert Gallatin was born in Geneva, Switzerland on 9 Jan 1761. He came to this country as a young man and became a strong, influential, political figure during the early years of our nation. Many historians believe he would have become President of the United States if it were not for his being born a foreigner.

Albert Gallatin, as he became known when he dropped the Abraham Alphonse from his name, made his home in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, although he spent much of his time away from home during his long years in politics. He started the town of New Geneva, which still exists today, and dubbed his homesite outside of town, Friendship Hill. Friendship Hill is now a National Historic Site open to the public.
