"The [Smashing Pumpkins] music is a lot of things. It's powerful, it's kind of insane sounding, it's kind of poppy sometimes, it's power poppy. A lot of it's overly dramatic, sad... you don't really think about it. You just put it together and throw it out and see if anyone likes it." -James
Interviewer: "Billy, what's your biggest hope for the album [Mellon Collie]?"
D'arcy: "The biggest hoke?"
Billy: "No, no, this is serious."
D'arcy: "Oh, sorry. "
Billy: "That, uh, the album will create a resolving harmonic in each person and... world peace
will be consummated and from that will be born babies.. .who will buy our records."
Interviewer: "And what if that doesn't happen?"
Billy: "Then we'll just have to come find YOU and kill YOU!!"
D'arcy: "I'll just be happy as long as people don't use the CD's as frisbees."
Sometimes I feel like I'm speaking Martian to people." -D'arcy
"I suppose listening to a double album is kind of like going to the chiropractor... It's pretty good for you but you can't force it on anyone else." -James
"My earliest memory is of feeling different. My parents told me that I wasn't like other children."-Billy
"But now I’m so sick or seeing myself this way that I think I’m just going to chop all the crazy stuff of and get a like normal Supercuts cut. I think that would be more rebellious, that would be more punk rock than dyed hair... Just like a regular guy hair cut. Whatever that is. Which is something normal. I’m sick of looking unnormal." -James (on his 'asian cat' hairstyle)
"D'arcy, is your hair really that white?" - Tyson Chihaya - New Wilmington, PA
"No. Don't let your eyes deceive you. The white effect you see is a trick we do with
mirrors... It's actually a black afro."
-D'arcy
"...I cried. Just for a second. Then I thought, 'I must rock.' " -James
"Let me tell you a secret..shh.you promise you won't tell? The secret is, there is no secret. You don't need to know anything, because there is nothing to know. All you need to know is your family, your friends, you air, your head, your earth, and your heart. All the other things like clothes and hair, they don't really matter. So there, that's your secret. Now don't tell anyone or I'll come kick your ass."-Billy
"Rock is always about rebelling against the parents." -D'arcy
"I always feel like our fans relate to us on a different level as other bands." -D'arcy
"Well, I had this really traumatic experience when I was fifteen. I got shrunk and I had to live in a thimble, and let me tell you that it was hard. The food was plentiful and all, but the attack of the rats got to be a bit much. It came out of the experiences of that time." -Billy (on the inspiration for the song 'Stumbleine')
"Recording with D'arcy is always an experience. She's crazy... I mean nuts, but she's great. I can't explain it." -James (on recording with D'arcy on Let it Come Down)
"People act like Nirvana invented grunge; they just took it and personified it." -Billy
"No. It will be three CDs... I'm kidding..But I'm going to tell people that from now on: 'A three CD Pumpkins extravaganza! The name of the record: 'Good Booty.' " -James (when asked if Adore would be a double album)
"For a 6-foot-3 guy with no hair and a whiny voice, I've done all right." -Billy
"At the end you flip back to the beginning or maybe somewhere in the middle and you always find the same thing: music." -James
"I'm not going to die glamorously. I'll probably be eating a Twinkie, take a bite, and fall over." -Billy
"That's our practice space and we recorded there. James did a couple of things at his studio. Billy did the demos at home. But actually there is a place called Pumpkinland. When we were on our very first tour, I think it's in California, there was this huge sign and it said Pumpkinland with big fluffy clouds on it. We took a picture in front of it. It's pretty funny." -D'arcy (on what Pumpkinland is)
"The message is there is no message. One million souls tossing down their hard-earned lettuce for a piece of hot rock indie pie. I've sold out. How about you? Everybody's doing it even if they say they're not. Don't ask me cause I don't know. Rock saves. It's the next big thing. Have you heard the next big thing? I'm part of the revolution. It's all coming down soon. Hope you're there." -from a Smashing Pumpkins T-shirt
"Everyone has a misguided perception of my brain. When people ask me questions about being sad, or thinking sad, or wanting to be sad, or do I listen to sad songs, it makes me think that I must be sad." -Billy
Interviewer: What rumors go around about the band that get back to you?
D'arcy: Well, I’ve been pregnant five times. The band has broken up I don’t know how many times. James died – twice.
"Two rules for dancers. . . Uhhhh. . . Dancers -- listen up. Dancers listen up!!! Ok. So, two rules: do not touch us and do not touch our shit. Now we can move on with the program and have fun. For all of those who cannot dance with us on stage, I encourage you to dance with us on stage. But, do it in your mind. Yes, many of you have taken college courses. You know what I'm talking about." -James (talking to the fans picked to dance on stage during 1979 and to the other fans during a recent concert)
