On Wednesday night, Bruce Chen made his Richmond debut, wowing the locals with his fresh talent. Fans at The Diamond were treated to a typical Chen outing, as he went six strong innings. Striking out eight and surrendering only one run on four hits, Chen proved that his stuff is good enough for any level of play.
"I pitched a good game," admitted Bruce afterwards, "but I'm not going to take it for granted that I'm going to always do good. I'm just going to take it one start at a time because I know the league is pretty good so I'll have to make some adjustments."
With his eight K's, Chen garnered his 14th consecutive start with at least five strikeouts. "I was feeling glad that I had people behind me to make the plays," said Chen, modestly downplaying his own performance. "They [the infielders] just came and talked to me on the mound and told me my stuff was good and to just keep pitching, let them hit the ball, and they'd make the plays for me."
Among the fans in attendance on this special night was Atlanta Braves president, Stan Kasten. There's no doubt that he knew he was simply watching the future of the Atlanta Braves... right now.
