A New # 5 ?

On November 10, the Braves traded Denny Neagle, Michael Tucker, and Robbie Bell to the Cincinnatti Reds for Bret Boone and Mike Remlinger. While everyone focused on the fact that the trade addressed the Braves' need for a second baseman and reliever, this move may have even more significance for Bruce Chen. Fans may recall that Chen's first major league start came when Neagle was scratched because of shoulder bursitis.

"Neags really could have gone," manager Bobby Cox said then. Perhaps even in September the Braves had this in mind: Bruce Chen as the fifth starter in the star- studded rotation. Chen had only a few starts, but in those games he showed that he has a very bright future ahead of him. Even Neagle had some good words for Bruce on Tuesday:

"The Braves could afford to give up a starting pitcher now. They've got Bruce Chen waiting in the wings. I think the kid's going to be a great pitcher."
