Menlo Church of Christ

MENLO CHURCH OF CHRIST BUILDING THIRTY YEARS AGO

Right at the foot of Lookout Mountain in Northwest Georgia sits the beautiful, quiet and peaceful town of Menlo. Here one sees a few places of business surrounded by a number of mostly clean-cut homes with neat and well-kept lawns, many of which sport beautiful flowers blooming almost the year round.

Among the several landmark buildings and churches of the town stands the old style white building of the Menlo church of Christ at 122 Bell Street. Built, we are told, not long after the turn of the century, the building has served as the place of worship for this congregation of the Lord's people, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren for more than a century.

The building stands much in the same fashion as it was originally erected, only with a few modifications and modernizations. The old wood stove has been replaced by central heating and air. The high wood ceiling has been lowered slightly. The hanging light bulbs have been replaced by recessed lighting units. A couple of classrooms have been added. A Wheelchair ramp has been built. And the solid wood floors have been covered with carpet.

On the outside, the building is almost entirely original, and the sturdy heart-wood timbers still stand firm. The building still stands tall and proud amidst the backdrop of the stately trees that surround it.

The simple worship, the sincere participants, the quaint surroundings and the old turn-of-the-century building team to impart that nostalgic era of yester-year, and once there, you know you have visited the old country church in the dale.
