Re: Election Office Case No. Post-039
Dear Mr. Syzmanski:
I have reviewed your request for further information regarding the mailings
performed by November Group which were paid for with contributions to the
'I'eamsters for a Corruption Free Union (TCFU). I have determined that
I can provide you with the following information without compromising our
policy of confidentiality with respect to investigatory materials.
Enclosed are copies of four leaflets which were produced by November
Group and funded by TCFU. With the exception of a few hundred of the leaflets
which were distributed by other means, the leaflets produced were mailed
directly to members as set forth below:
255,094 copies produced of the leaflet "Don't Let Corruption Back in
Our Union" distributed to members in the freight industry and to a more
general targeted group of likely Carey supporters.
242,913 copies produced of the leaflet "Is Your Pension Safe" distributed
to members employed by UPS, in the freight industry and to a more general
targeted group of likely Carey supporters.
388,262 copies produced of the leaflet "Keep Our Unions Strong" distributed
to members employed by UPS, to members in the freight industry, and to
a more general targeted group of likely Carey supporters.
Thus, approximately 886,000 leaflets were paid for by the TCFU contributions
and directly mailed to members on various dates during the first week of
November, 1996, as part of the Carey direct mail campaign. Certain groups
of members received more than one leaflet. The total direct mail campaign
during early November was comprised of approximately two million pieces
of mail, including the TCFU-funded mailings set forth above. During the
election campaign, other mailings, not including the direct mail campaign
identified here, were sent directly to members or groups of members.
Should you wish to utilize this information in presenting further argument
as to the effect of the TCFU contribution on the outcome of the election,
please provide your submission by June 6, 1997.
Sincerely,
Barbara Zack Quindel Election Officer
