Krag Model 1898
The Krag, introduced as the model 1892, was developed to keep pace with the rest of the worlds militaries. With the invention of smokeless powder, other countries, following Mausers lead, were moving toward a magazine fed, bolt action, small caliber rifle for their armies. The krag replaced the standard issue 45-70 Springfield trapdoor rifle. Chambered for the 30-40 Krag, it was and is still today one of the smoothest actions around. This rifle was made at the Springfield Armory in 1902.

The Krag utilized a unique side loading design. The magazine door on the side of the rifle opens downward allowing 5 cartridges to be dropped in. Upon closing this door, the 5 rounds are aligned and fed under, up and around the follower to be stripped off and chambered when the bolt is cycled.
