The surname Eaton is locative in origin that is to say derived from the name of a place - Eaton, of which there are numberous examples in England. The place-name sometimes means homestead or village on the river and sometimes homestead or village in an island. Once everyone was known by a single name but this lead to confusion and so an extra name was adopted. Thus a man named John how hailed from Eaton might be known as "John (of) Eaton", the additional name eventually becoming hereditary as a surname.

Early records mention Peter de Eton and Brian de Eton who appear in Hundred Rolls of Huntingdonshire and Wiltshire, respectively, in 1275, and Robert de Eton, in berkshire in 1292.

Francis Eaton arrived in America aboard the 'Mayflower' in 1620.

Theophilus Eaton (1590 p - 1658) was an original patentee and magistrate of Massachusetts in 1620. He founded New Haven in 1638 and was annually re-elected governor from 1639 to 1658. His brother, Samuel Eaton (1596 p - 1665) was also at New Haven but returned to England in 1640.

Nathaniel Eaton (1609 p - 1674), another brother, emigrated to America in 1637 and the following year became President designate of Harvard College.

The arms illustrated which are described heraldically as: Or, a that azure; Crest: An eagle's head erased sable in the beak a sprig vert; and for Motto: Vincit omnia veritas, are ascribed to a family named Eaton, of Nottinghamshire. Writers in the past have attributed symbolism to the tinctures and charges of heraldry - thus, or (gold), is said to denote Generosity; azure (blue), Loyalty; sable (black), Wisdom; and vert (green), Courtesy. The fret signifies Persuasion and the eagle, A Man of Action.
