Brent's Favorite Sports Teams

I guess my first day as a Georgia fan was back in 1980. I was about one year old and my dad was watching the UGA/Florida game on television. Being daddy's little boy at the time, I was naturally watching the game right along side him, even though I didn't have a clue as to what was going on. That day, Georgia was undefeated and if they were able to beat Florida, they would have a legitimate chance at a national title. Well, considering that my dad LOVES the dawgs he was very into that game and if you've ever meet my dad you'd know that he can get VERY intense when it comes to sports. As the game went along, the two teams were neck and neck for the most part until with only a few seconds left in the fourth quarter, it looked as if the Dawgs were going to lose the game. Their only chance was to go over 90 yards in less than ten seconds. Well, all I know is that I was there (a one year old, chilling with his bottle) and my dad started going nuts. I was afraid that he was having a nervous breakdown or something. As it turned out, Georgia had completed like a 91 yard touchdown and had beaten the Florida Gators in the "World's Largest Cocktail Party." Well, the rest is history. Munson feel out of his chair, the Dawgs won the National Title, Hershel Walker won the Heisman a few years later, my dad is still a freak, and i'm a Georgia fan.

I guess that I started to like the Florida State Seminoles around the 5th grade. If I remember correctly, that was the season after Deion Sanders left for the NFL. The thing that got me into FSU that season was their complete domination in the Fiesta Bowl. I enjoyed the tomahawk chop and just the fact that the team seemed to have so much fun. I really started following the Seminoles closely when they started seriously competing for national championships in the following years. The two straight years where the Seminoles lost to Miami due to a "wide right" field goal were heartbreaking. Finally, Florida State won a National Championship in 1993 behind the leadership of Heisman trophy winner, Charlie Ward. Since 1993, FSU has competed for the national title almost every year and the team has finished in the top 4 for over 10 consective seasons. I guess that's what I like about Florida State the most, the fact that they always have a good team that can compete for a championsip.

I guess you see a trend here, I like winners, and in my lifetime the winniest team in the National Football League over that span has got to be the San Francisco 49ers. The niners have won five Super Bowls, go to the playoffs every year, and are always a threat to win the Lombardi Trophy. I can not think of one bad 49er team since Joe Montana hooked up with Dwight Clark in the 1981 NFC Championship game (you know, "The Catch"). There have been so many great 49er players and so many great 49er teams, that I am not even going to try to name them all. I guess my favorite 49er team was the 1995 Super Bowl Champs for one simple reason, Deion!! Deion mixed his unique style with the traditional 49er class and it was like magic. San Francisco run all over the entire NFL that season, rounding things off by blowing out San Diego in Super Bowl.

What can I say about the team of the nineties that has not already been said? The Braves have spoiled me. Like every other living organism inside of the state of Georgia, I really started liking the Braves during the 1991 season. The 1991 Braves were a "team" in every way. Individually, none of those guys had become superstars, but together they almost won the World Championship. Throughout the decade, the Braves have gotten many new faces, in fact, I can only think of about two current Braves that were on that 1991 team. Although the roster is completely different, the team still looks exactly the same in the win/loss column. To me, that shows what a great organization that the Braves have become.

College basketball always seems to have a couple of teams that are always just awesome. One of those teams would be the North Carolina Tarheels. Although I didn't catch Michael Jordan winning the National title as a freshman, moments like that are what UNC basketball is all about. I guess my favorite team at North Carolina was the 1993 team. I remember that I was in the eighth grade that season and I watched about every game on TV. I still remember the starting lineup, even. Derrick Phelps, Donald Williams, Eric Montross, George Lynch, and Brian something (i almost remembered it). Well, anyways, that was the team that won the national title over the "Fab Five" from Michigan when Chris Webber called timeout after the Wolverines had already used all of their timeouts up, thus resulting in a technical foul and sealing the deal for the Tarheels. I remember people always said that UNC got lucky that night. That is true, but they forget that Webber called the timeout when the Tarheels had like a 4 point lead already and no one seems to give credit to the Tarheel defense for making him use up that timeout (just something that I always like to point out). Well anyways, every year during the NCAA tournament I always love to see the Tarheels play because they usually come close to winning the whole thing, and I LOVE to see my teams win.
