Prophesied by George Orwell
in 1949, 1984 has a haunting quality that not only is frightening,
but brings a reader back for more. He has
created a world in which nothing exists unless the all-powerful government
wishes it to exist. In a world dominated, if not comprised
of, (it's never made clear) three countries defined by their absolute
locations, Winston Smith is only a chess piece easily maneuverable by the
communist government. What he discovers is enough to destroy the
government, if only he were able to survive long enough. The tale of his
discovering the truth, and also his discovering the hopelessness that
surrounds his dream of exposing the government is one that has enthralled
readers decades even after the year 1984 has passed.
