A novel that takes place over twenty years during WWII and after, Light A Penny Candle is a absorbing book. Though it is not a romance, love and loss tend to be the main themes of the book. I found this book so engrossing that I was unable to put it down. Literally. It is the story of two 10 year olds brought together by their mothers during WWII in the hope that the young british girl, Elizabeth, will be safe from the London bombings. They become friends, and with Aisling (pronounced Ashleen) to help her, even the reclusive Elizabeth learns how to take care of herself. Once the war is over, a 16 year old Elizabeth returns to her family to find her parents fragile marriage torn to peices and her life different than she ever imagined. From across the ocean in Ireland, Aisling helps her through that period in her life, and in return Elizabeth helps her friend through her troubled marriage with an alcoholic. This story unfolds during changing years in post WWII Britain and Ireland when the old ways no longer work, and the new ways demand daring. |
