Based on the real life of W.P. Inman, a Confederate Soldier, this novel interweaves both his story of the long journey to Cold Mountain and that of the survival of his love, Ada. After being sorely wounded at Petersburg, Inman survives to the hospital where no one expects him to live. Against extreme odds, he survives and spends his coalescence reminiscing about the short moments spent with Ada, the strange but delicately beautiful woman he left behind at the start of the war. During his journey of several months, Inman traverses dangerous terrain, escaping death from bears, starvation and the Home Guard, ragtag bands of those unfit or unwilling to join the cuase who search for deserters, or outliers as they are often called. The other half of the novel centers on Ada, a Charleston society girl who shunned society and movied to Cold Mountain with her ministering father several years before the onset of the war. During the course of this novel, she must learn to survive on her own after her father's death and the depletion of the value of his investments by the war. Incredibly visual but still fast-paced, this novel is certainly one of hte best in recent times. Primarily dealing with the realities of life (including war and death), the story has the strength to endure and become a classic. Touching. "Come back to me is my request."
