Elric of Melniboné

Main Book Review Page

Michael Moorcock

This is the classic dark fantasy first tale of Michael Moorcock in the series that encompasses the destiny of  his most famous hero (or anti-hero as some call him) Elric, Emperor of the Dreaming City, Immyr of Melniboné.  In the first novel, Elric, known for being an unorthodox emperor, one who has ideas of "morality" and does not abide by the cruel and selfish ways of the rest of Melniboné, is forced to take action against his upstart cousin, Yyrkoon the brother of his betrothed, Cymoril.  Yyrkoon, after the fashion of most Melnibonéans, desires a return to the ways of the old Lords of Melniboné, and thinks himself up to the task.  Haunting, captivating and exquisitely well-written and thought-out, this is the first book of an exceptional series.
