This "classic" by Ernest Hemingway was written using his experiences in World War I as  a basis.  It is the story of a love affair between an American ambulanza driver and a beautiful Scottish nurse in Italy.  Despite their horrific surroundings, they fall in love and dream of a life together.  This novel portrays the first world war in all of it's ghastliness.  A Farewell to Arms is one of Hemingway's most recognized and famous works, and is written in his own newly discovered romantic style.  With it's realistic portrayal of the lines of wounded men and their bleak surroundings, it seems even more true with Luitenant Henry and Catherine Barkley's desperate love.

This is perhaps one of the greatest love stories ever written.  It's realistic setting and unforgettable plot and characters make it a classic.

*Ernest Hemingway received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, 25 years after this novel was written.
