This the story of Lyra Belacqua, the little girl who roams the halls of Jordan College. She has always lived there, never knowing why exactly, only that her parents were killed in a airship accident and her Uncle, Lord Asriel, cannot take care of her. In a world where every human's soul is called a dæmon and is visible in the form of a creature, children's dæmons do not choose a form to remain in until they become young adults. Lyra and her dæmon, little Pantalaimon, hide in the closet of the Retiring Room, a room of Jordan College where only men are allowed. There she sees the Master's plot to poison her uncle, and warns him. This first act sets into motion her destiny, one which will take her to the Arctic, introduce her to witches, armoured bears, and involve her in all that is evil in her world. Her destiny may even leade her to new worlds, in search of a magical elementary particle called Dust. Complex and involving, this book is hard to put down, and is even harder to put out of one's mind. Endearing characters, exciting adventures, and the strains of learning about life is only part of what makes this book so wonderful.
