Joan of Arc

Main Book Review Page
Mark Twain from notes by her secretary Jewliet's Main Page

Joan of Arc was composed soon after the heroic soldier was burned to death in the 15th century. She was a young girl who as a child hears voices who tell her that she is to crown the Dauphin, the future King of France. Her "Voices" as she calls them, say that they are St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margarent and direct her to lead the forces of France to recapture their country. She does so, crowns the Dauphin (heir to the throne) and then is captured as she tries to retake Paris. By the laws of war, Joan is allowed a ransom, and before she can be tried, it is offered. But the ransom never comes, and the story of her trial and how the British officials try to torture her into condemning herself as a witch is enthralling. A classic, this story will endure for years to come, as it has for centuries. The story was written  by Joan's page and secretary Sieur Louis de Conte. One that will forever remain in your mind, the story of the tragic and triumphant Joan of Arc is beautiful.

"Love, Mercy, Charity, Fortitude, War, Peace, Poetry, Music-these may be symbolized as any shall prefer: by figures of either sex and of any age; but a slender girl in her first young bloom, with the martyr's crown upon her head, and in her hand the sword that severed her country's bonds-shall not this, and no other, stand for PATRIOTISM through the ages until time shall end?" -Mark Twain
