Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier is a classic example of a romantic suspense novel. A young girl meets the dashing and charming Maxim de Winter in Monte Carlo, where he has taken refuge after the sudden death of his beautiful wife, Rebecca. After a whirlwind courtship, she became the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter and was drawn into the life of Rebecca. Though she's gone, she hasn't been forgotten, neither by her loyal servant, Mrs. Danvers, or by any of the people of the town who live near the immense estate. Rebecca's real fate lays undiscovered, waiting for someone, perhaps the newest Mrs. de Winter. Waiting, wtih all of the secrets of Manderley. *Served as the basis for the Alfred Hitchcock movie starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1940.
