Sailor on the Seas of Fate

Main Book Review Page

Michael Moorcock

In this third installment in the Elric: Song of the Black Sword series, a subs-eries of the longer Eternal Champion series, Elric, besieged by thirst and enemies, far from his home of Melniboné, believes himself to be dying on a distant shore, when suddenly a ship appears, bringing with it a mist.  Once on board, he  meets the Four-Who-Are-One, and the dozen other soldiers all picked up in similar situations, all seemingly bound for a great battle.  The strange, blind captain can tell them little about the upcoming fight, but lacking anything else to do, or any other choices on the strange sea, Elric and the other men agree to fight.  They land on an island to fight the sorcerers Agak and Gagak, brother and sister intent on drinking the power of the Universe.  From that fight they go their separate ways, but Elric is not yet destined to find his way back to Melniboné, being embroiled in several more adventures before the end of the novel.  Full of beautiful imagery and emphasizing the interconnectedness of Moorcock's world, Sailor on the Seas of Fate is a quick but enthralling read for any fans of the Elric saga.
