Set in an exotic world known intimately to few, Harrer's autobiographical account of his years in Tibet are both riveting and beautiful. It is a culture unknown to westerners until the late 19th century, and still not well known. His account spans from when he escaped from POW camp of the British during WWII with a friend, Peter Aufschnaiter, until he is forced to leave the land he has come to love by the invading Chinese. It is amazingly told, full of observations of the people he came to know, including the Dalai Lama himself, who was just a teenager. This book tells the true story of the grand country that lay between India and China, and of the unique people it is populated by. Non-fiction. |
