Utopia by Thomas More was completed in 1516. A novel that is ultimately beyond it's time, it has been praised as an idealistic future for communism. Though it was written so many centuries ago, the novel reads as well as any contemporary. Utopia is about a land that a traveler discusses with a friend and his companion. He discusses all aspects of their culture, from marriage to farming. While reading one begins to wonder if such an enlightened culture could ever exist, and if so, when? Life isn't like it was in the former USSR, though both countries are communist. According to the novel, Utopia was created by a great leader who used his own troops to create the buildings and roads that make up his kingdom. After he had controlled the natives, he began to instruct them in etiquette and his way of living. Once he died, they were left to control themselves using methods of government he had devised. The traveler's tale of his visit to their land is one that anyone could enjoy and was most certainly written to make the reader wonder, "could that happen?"
