Notes for J
ACOB VOYLES:

About 1755 Jacob Voyles and his four sons, William, Thomas, James and John Came to America from Pembrokeshire, Wales (A number of researchers places Jacob coming from Denbighshire, Wales. There has never been any sources found from Denbighshire, sources point to Pembrokeshire.)

The family incurred some unexpected debts on the trip and William was indentured to the Ship's Captain for four years to pay off the debt. It has been said that William was very upset with his father for indenturing him that he did not come back to South Carolina but settled in North Carolina. William has been found in DAR records and the National Archives listing him as a soldier in the North Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War.

Sometime later William's brothers followed him to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. and Cabarrus County. Cabarrus County was formed from Mecklenburg County in 1792.

By the time of the 1790 census, William and Thomas were in Mecklenburg County, James was in Rowan County, North Carolina, John was in South Carolina.

Thomas Voyles is listed as receiving pay from the State of North Carolina for services during the Revolutionary War.
