Owl Creek Range
The Owl Creek Range is in central Wyoming, between the Bighorn mts and the northern tip of the the Wind River Range. The structure of Owl Creek is a thrust, like the Wind River, but the dipslope of this range descends gently towards the north. The rocks were thrust south and the mechanism for how this may have occured is still of some debate. Wise (1963) suggested that there was a large fold which overturned onto itself so that many reverse faults formed on a hinge that pointed to the south. These reverse faults eventually join a master reverse fault. The results are paleozoic and preCambrian rocks resting on top of mesozoic sedimentary rocks. In some of the small scale reverse faults (those which joined the master) there is early mesozoic rocks thrust onto mid to late mesozoic rocks.
