Greece 2000

We spent three weeks this summer in Greece. We visited Athens, the capitol, then took a 5 day bus tour of the Peloponnese Peninsular. Next we took a 5 day cruise of the Greek Islands. We were supposed to go to Israel next, but, we canceled because of the fighting. Instead, we went to Thessaloniki (northern Greece [Macedonia]) where we stayed and rented a car to drive around for another week.

On top of the Acropolis in front of the Parthenon

This is the view of the Acropolis from our hotel room

The paving wasn't quite up to standards (anyone's standards). A long walk up and rough footing everywhere!

Nancy in front of the statue of the "ladies"

The Temple of Zeus - originally 200 columns - larger than the Parthenon!

The Roman AGORA (market) view from the Acropolus. St. Paul spoke on Mars Hill near here.

"Put on the full armor of God.." This is how the armor looked to St. Paul.

They worshiped BULLS - There were hundreds of examples in the museum.
We saw several FULL-SIZED bulls - One in solid Silver!

Someone's missed her nap. BTW we took no naps for three weeks - how about that!

Olives - On the tree and in the Market. BTW the black ones are left on the tree to ripen more.

The Athens Market. Pigs for sale.

Greek snack food for sale at a parade. It is like a sesame bread ring.

Greek soldiers on guard at the tomb of the unknown soldier in Athens.

Lots of Turkish rugs and Greek ones too.

The Greeks put up a road-side shrine at places along the roads where a loved one has been killed. There are some very fancy ones. In places with a lot of accidents there are MANY little shrines. BTW, they also sometimes put up shrines when they escape accidents.

Nafplio - a view of the castle in the harbor - from our hotel. You couldn't get a bus up to this hotel. So, they drilled through the mountain below the hotel in put in two elevators!!!
This is a SUPER town!

One Monastary wouldn't let anyone in who wasn't "properly" dressed. They furnished SKIRTS for those needing an outfit. David was OK so he took the picture. BTW, one of those in a skirt is a brigadier general in the US Army.

Olympia (built 300 BC)- the first olympic site - And one of the original runners!

The famous Temple of Delphi - where the Oracle of Delphi told her fortunes. This was a huge site on the side of a mountain. It contained many levels with treasury buildings for gifts to their gods . The site also had it's own olympic track for games and contests.

Our Cruise took us to Ephesus, now part of Turkey. This is the Agora (market)of ancient Ephesus, where St. Paul preached. This is where the craftsmen made their idols to other gods.

This is the stadium in Ephesus where the crowd wanted to kill St. Paul for ruining their idol business.

Nancy is sitting on a hill overlooking Patmos' harbor. Patmos is the island where St. John was exiled.

An Orthodox Monk stands in front of the cave where St Paul wrote the Book of Revelation.

Sunset on the island of Mykonos with white-washed Greek Orthodox churches by the harbor!

Greece had enough for at least another month of visiting. Their sites were from 750,000 year old caves (oldest in europe) - to 2000 BC castles and tombs to 150 AD Roman ruins.

Highly recommended!!!
