*Here Is the Arctic Winter by Madeleine Dumphy
With this story we also use our Froggy. It is a stuffed Froggy with all clothes. It can be used to reenact the story. You can do this at circle with the book, or/and let the kids do it at a center.
At the art center, leave out glue, precut snowmen(large), precut hat/scarfs of various colors, and collage materials (colored macaroni, buttons, etc;). I try to leave a copy of the book on the table, as well.
Leave a copy that you are not too worried about.
I usually make a bulletin board about this book, in my room. The kids love Peter, and it helps them to understand a little about the story and author. (See storytelling page for a neat idea to use with this book)
(Also see the bulletin board section, on this book)
With this book, we also use the masks, to accompany the story, placing them in a large mitten, as we go along. Then we put the masks at the puppet center. You can get these masks from Jan Brett's web page www.janbrett.com. We also eat a mitten snack, using pita bread, marshmallow spread, and animal crackers. See the recipe page.
I also bring in the video of this book and let the kids watch it. It is just like the book.
Just a Snowy Day by Mercer Mayer This is a tactile book with different textures/smells. This is such a great interactive book for circle time. If it is possible, try sipping warm chocolate, while reading. If not, try it for a treat afterwards. Talk about the feel and smell.
