Uncle Johnny, Aunt Vivian, Mom, Aunt Kathleen

The first thought that comes to my mind when I think of mom is her blue eyes. Depending on her mood, they range from a soft pale blue to a deep stormy ocean blue. While I was a teenager they seemed to stay a dark blue, gosh wonder if that was my fault? *S*

When I was growing up mom was always the constant in the house. You knew come hell or high water mom would be there. Knowing what I do now, it's a mircle she didn't run away. I hope she realizes how much Larry and I appreciate her staying.

Mom was the perfect mother, and she would put June Cleaver to shame. She always had time to sew Barbi doll clothes or the latest fashions for me. She even emceed our fall fashion show every year....don't ask I was a kid. I remember one time going out to sell girl scout cookies and coming home with two pet mice. She didn't even get mad over that, but she did say they had to stay in the garage. When I was in Jr. High School she volunteered at the school I attended. All the kids told me my mom was cool, I thought so to. After my parents divorced times were tough, but mom made sure we still had fun. We spent many weekends eating nachos at the mall, and window shopping. I treasure the memories of those weekends.

You would think she had endured enough in her life, but God had another test for her. We were in Hawaii when the call came...I will never forget that call. A lump had been found on her breast. Yes, it turned out to be cancer. Hey no tears, she fought it with the same courage and dignity she has all the battles in her life and she won! For some reason that we still don't understand the test from God would continue. Severe sinus problems sent her to an ENT doctor, a routine chest x-ray was ordered. Then the words from the ENT doctor saying she needed to see her oncologist, not a good thing to hear. A visit to the Mayo Clinic confirmed that numerous tumors were found in all four lobes of her lungs. What had happened was the breast cancer had moved to the lungs instead of the other breast. I just remember thinking how damn unfair it was, she had passed the 5-year mark and this was not supposed to happen. Fortunately they have great medicine for this now, and mom has been on it for 2 1/2 years. So far all is well and the lungs are clear. As with all forms of cancer the emotional tole it plays on the victim and the family is trememdous, but we have pulled our strength from mom. My mom beat cancer once before, and I truly believe she will beat it again.

I wanted to share with you the person that has had the greatest influence on my life. I love this woman with all my heart and soul. My greatest wish would be for my children to one day look at me with the same love, admiration and respect that I have for mom. Mom, I love you!!
