The Cat-Tail Battery

Author's Note..."Coorigan" and "Coorigans" refers to any siege engine (catapult, trebuchet, etc.) used by Rivermarchers. The names come from, and are in honor of, THL Seamus Corrigan who is the Archery/Siege Weapons Marshal of Meridies.

From March/Meridian Maneuvers to Chalice tourneys of the Southern Marches to an event tourney in Arkansas, Rivermarchers have been known for their team fighting prowess. This tradition continues with the Cat-Tail Battery.

While individual siege engines/artillery pieces have played a role in SCA combat, presently, there are no organized siege/field artillery batteries within the society. The Cat-Tail Battery is a shire-wide unit of "Coorigan" artillery pieces capable of supporting fighters during either a field or siege battle.

The battery is divided into three sections:
*) Artillery section--fighters specifically working with the "Coorigans" and related items.
*) Fighter section--fighters using other weapons (sword, polearm, etc.) to protect the Artillery section.
*) Support section--non-fighters providing "off-field" assistance where needed.

Emphasizing teamwork in combat is not the battery's sole purpose. It's also an ongoing arts and sciences project--topics include heraldry, first aid, costuming, construction, cooking, meadmaking, armormaking, bardic skills--as well as serving a ceremonial role at large scale demos. Note to fighters: members of the Artillery and Fighters sections will be trained to operate AND defend the "Coorigans."
