"Through there," said Janus pointing to a very small crack in a hill.
Hotaru nodded and continued running, breathing heavily. Both reached the crack and squeezed through, and to Hotaru's surprise, entered a small cave.
"You knew about this?" she asked in a whisper, while sucking in a large breath of air.
Janus grinned, but didn't answer. Outside, they could heard the Youma approaching.
"What now?" asked Hotaru in worry.
"I'll lead it off. You wait ten minutes, and go about a third of a mile to the West and you'll reach another hill with another cave like this. Inside is a beacon that I put in a few days ago in case of something dangerous happening."
"You knew?" asked Hotaru, even more surprised.
Janus nodded grimly, "I keep tabs on what goes on. And it was better to be safe than sorry. With luck, my father on Titan has heard about this and is sending his army as we speak."
Hotaru hugged her cousin and friend and then watched as Janus slipped out of the cave.
Janus kept low to the ground and then began to run. She didn't know if she had been seen, but she could only hope she hadn't. She tripped a few times and cast a few disdainful glances at the long, pink and purple gown she was wearing, now torn in a number of places, and soiled from dirt.
"There you are!" exclaimed a Youma, suddenly appearing before her.
Janus yelped and ducked as a tendril shot out and attempted to grab her.
As she came back up, she grabbed a branch and threw it at the Youma like a club. It blocked it, but Janus ran in it's distraction.
"Come back runt!" shouted the Youma.
Janus continued running and came into the now deserted city near the palace. She ran through the silent street, the Youma following close behind and then caught sight of an open door.
Janus ran through it quickly and slammed the door shut. She heard the Youma pound on it and turned and ran up the stairs to a window. She climbed out onto the roof and looked out to see no way off.
Down in the house, she heard the door break open and her face turned white. She ran to edge of the house and looked down to see a tree. Taking a deep breath she prepared to jump, but a net was suddenly over her and she fell to the ground.
"Looks like I bagged some royalty," said a woman with blonde hair.
She laughed as the Youma appeared on the roof. Janus could only moan at the mess she'd gotten into.
Oberon leaned against the wall and wiped her face as Charon finished off the last Youma.
"Where are the two girls?" asked Nereid.
"They ran off." said Oberon, her voice showing how tired she really was. "A Youma went after them."
Charon looked out in concern, "We must find them then."
"I'll go West." said Nereid.
"I'll head to the city." said Oberon.
"I'll go East then." said Charon and produced three broaches, "Use these to contact eachother."
Oberon took hers and pinned it to her uniform, as did Charon and Nereid.
"Good luck." said Oberon and then bolted off at a run, having the furthest known distance to go.
Nereid watched and then looked at Charon, "Be careful, ok?"
"I will not fail." said Charon in a matter of fact tone.
Nereid smiled softly and then ran off towards the west and Charon headed east.
As Oberon ran, she found the girl's foot prints. She followed them to a cave near the city, and discovered that they split off in different directions, and the footsteps of a Youma following one towards the city. Oberon grimaced.
"Guys," she called pressing the brooch.
"Yes, Oberon?" asked Nereid's voice.
"I found the girl's trail. One of the is headed west, the other is headed towards the city, a Youma was following."
"Shall I come and assist?" asked Charon's voice.
Oberon glanced at the Youma's tracks, "No. The Youma's not to big, and should be easy to handle."
"All right. We'll meet you at the castle," said Charon.
"Be careful," added Nereid.
"Thanks. I will," said Oberon. "Just get the princess and take her home before something else happens."
"Right," said Charon and the communication went off.
Oberon nodded to herself and continued running, following the footprints till she was met by the graveled sidewalks and roads of the city. She looked around and saw a number of destroyed carts in the road headed deeper into the city, and guessed that that was where she needed to go.
She continued running, ignoring her body's pleas for rest.
"Supreme General Amyste." said the Youma. "Sailor Oberon is headed this way."
Amyste looked at Janus in amusement, "I may be able to use you."
"No way!" exclaimed Janus.
Amyste smiled more largely and easily lifted Janus and the net with one hand. Janus squirmed and kicked in the net and Amyste began to laugh.
"You can't think you can get out of this net?" she asked in a jeering voice.
"Supreme General..." started the Youma in a worried voice.
"Shut-up and don't interrupt!" said Amyste angrily at the Youma.
The Youma shrank back and looked over the building worriedly. Suddenly it was decapitated in a ball of light, and vanished. Janus smiled at Amyste as the scout in dark blue and Violette leapt onto the roof.
"Release that girl!" demanded Oberon, her blue eyes steeling in anger.
Amyste looked shocked at the figure, and then replaced the look with spite, "Really Kalinyte. After the years we've known eachother, I wouldn't think you'd turn to this."
"That is the past," said Oberon coldly. "I am no longer with the Negaverse. Even you know that."
Amyste's eyes showed a tint of sadness, "If that's the way you want it. I will have to kill you."
Oberon nodded grimly, "So be it. I am sorry our friendship had to end this way."
"As am I." said Amyste.
She carried Janus over to a protruding pole on the roof and hung her from there and took a place at the center. Both looked at eachother remembering the fun they had had with eachother, and the friendship they had shared, and then attacked.
Oberon leapt out of the swords reach, her white pony tail nearly getting a trim from it's sharp blade.
She caught site of a sword sticking out of the wall near a dead soldier and caught hold of it. She brought it up just in time to block a blow from Amyste.
"You're getting slow," commented Oberon.
"You're getting weak," countered Amyste as she pressed down, closer to Oberon's face.
Oberon gathered some strength and shoved Amyste away, "Guess again."
Amyste smiled slightly and then frowned as she attacked again, swinging for Oberon's legs. Oberon leapt away nimbly, but Amyste followed, pressing the attack while Oberon remained on defense.
Oberon's eyes saw a glint and saw a large, gagged piece of material. She scooped it up as Amyste was spinning away from an attack and threw it in Janus's direction.
"Princess!" excalimed Nereid seeing the younger girl appear from the hill as if by magic.
Hotaru smiled happily and embrased the dark haired scout in relief. Then she looked up at Nereid with a serious face.
"My cousin led a Youma away to the city."
"Sailor Oberon is going after her." said Nereid softly, "She'll be fine."
Charon came sprinting up and looked at Nereid and Hotaru.
"We should get her back into the palace before anything else can happen. I am sure King Saturnial would be happy to see his daughter." stated Charon, not showing any signs of fatigue.
Hotaru grew excited and suddenly wrapped her arms around Charon. Chraon's eyes widened in surprise a moment and then relaxed and Nereid watched Charon in anticpation of a smile, but it never came. She sighed and took hold of Hotaru's hand.
"Come on Princess, lets get you home." she said in a gentle voice.
Hotaru nodded and they walked onwards, Charon taking the lead to make sure things were safe ahead. When Charon was out of hearing Hotaru looked up at Nereid to speak about something she had wanting to say in the garden before her attempted kidnapping.
"Why is she so cold?"
"She's not cold." said Nereid. "She is just out to get the job done. She has lived a lonely life and I suppose she has never had a real reason to smile."
Hotaru nodded as if understanding and then looked sad.
"What is wronge Hotaru?" asked Nereid, sensing there was more.
"May I tell you something? Something I've only told Janus?" asked Hotaru.
"If you are certain you want to." said Nereid.
Hotaru was silent a moment and then nodded, "I am."
"Alright then." said Nereid.
"I have been having dreams of my future." said Hotaru. "And I fear it will not be nice. I will be as a messenger of death."
Nereid almost stopped and looked at the small, pale girl girl holding her hand.
"Are you certain?" asked Nereid and remembered the image that Oberon had projected.
"Yes. They have been quite vivid. Even Janus has seen them." said Hotaru.
Nereid was thoughtful and thought about the two young girls in the images from Oberon, and what they could mean. They were almost to the palace when Hotaru continued talking again.
"Janus and I have a fate together and it has drawn us together to be more like sisters than cousins. I love her with all of my heart, and I don't want to see her hurt."
"Don't worry Hotaru, Janus will be fine." said Nereid giving her a hug as they walked.
"My Hotaru!" shouted a voice sounding a mix of happiness and relief.
Hotaru's face broke into a smile and she sprinted forward into her father's arms.
Swords clashed and the air was thick with dust as Janus watched Sailor Oberon the the Supreme General Amyste fight. She had never seem such a heated battle, and it seemed as if it would never end. Suddenly both dissappeared from view on another roof again and she went back to work at reaching a large piece of shrapnel that had been thrown over by accident or purpose by Oberon as she fought earlier.
She stretched and her fingertips brushed the slab. She frowned and stretched and pushed in the net so she could reach out further. Finally, after what seemed like hours, she grasped it and lifted it up.
"Thank-you!" she murmered.
She began to saw at the net with the sharp end, making quick work of intrapment. As the final strand was cut, she fell to the ground. Dazed a moment, she looked around and then stood up. She could see Oberon and Amyste again and she carefully made her way to the edge of the roof to watch.
Oberon leapt away from a slash of Amyste's sword.
"You don't have to do this." said Oberon. "You can go to Queen Serenity and ask pardon. She'll take you in."
"Never!" exclaimed Amyste. "I won't betray my sister as our nephew did."
Oberon briefly remembered the shock in the kingdom when Nuoto had left them for the enemy. Her memory was cut short as she saw Lady Janus watching.
'Why is she still here?' she wondered in anger. 'She should escape while she can.'
Amyste kicked Oberon back to the edge of the roof and held her blade just over Oberon's thoat, using a foot to keep Oberon's sword pinned against the wall. Oberon winced in the pain from her hand and then glared at Amyste.
"There's no way that you joined them willingly." said Amyste after staring at Oberon for a few moments.
She suddenly released Oberon and Oberon stood up properly and brought her sword up to fight again.
"What did they do to you?" asked Amyste, in an almost quiet voice.
"Nothing, I joined of my own free will." said Oberon and lunged forward.
Amyste met Oberon with a fierce look as she paried the blow. Suddenly there was a sound and both looked to see Janus.
Janus's eyes widened when she saw that Amyste had seen her. Instantly she turned and ran, but Amyste followed, with Oberon close behind. As Janus came to the window, an arm was wrapped around her waste and she was carried into the air, pressed instantly against a body. Amyste landed on the next roof with Janus and pressed her sword against Janus's throat as Oberon landed before them.
"Stop where you are Oberon, or I kill her," said Amyste, her voice sounding ragged from the fight.
Janus opened her mouth to speak, but Amyste pressed the blade inwards slightly, silencing her.
"Don't kill her, Amyste," said Oberon. "You don't believe in it."
"I may not believe in it," said Amyste, her voice sounding strained. "But if I must, I will."
Janus suddenly began to feel sick, and her head felt a little fuzzy.
"What?" said Amyste suddenly releasing Janus.
Janus sank to her knees, and Oberon and Amyste looked at her in surprise.
"A Guardian!" exclaimed both at once.
As Oberon came to Janus's side, a henshin stick appeared before her. With awe, Janus reached out and touched the floating stick. There was a brightening from the stick, and then Janus was now a Sailor Scout in a pink and purple uniform.
"Just like my dream," said Janus in w small whisper.
"The scout in my thoughts," murmured Oberon at the same time.
Both looked at eachother in wonder and worry.
Later, as Nereid and Charon sat talking Hotaru pointed to something in a distances.
"It's them!" she shouted.
Charon and Nereid looked out and saw two scouts running towards the wall.
"Oberon found another..." started Nereid and then her eyes widened.
"Janus is the other scout," stated Charon.
"She is Sailor Titan," said a deep voice.
Both turned and saw King Saturnial, looking sad.
"Your Highness?" questioned Nereid.
"My wife and her sister both knew of these two's fate," he said pointing to his daughter and then out to the new scout approaching. "They knew most of the old planetary scouts."
He looked at Nereid directly as Charon turned and looked out, "My eldest daughter died in another system as Sailor Saturn. My wife also died as Sailor Saturn, and her mother before her."
I don't understand." said Nereid. "I thought only Solaris and Cosmos were of this system. Then the Guardians were said to appear."
Saturnial watched the two scouts coming towards the castle in the distance.
"There have always been planetary scouts, but they have been dormant. Sailor Scouts appear when trouble comes. The more the danger, the more scouts will awaken."
"You are wise King Saturnial," said Charon in respect. "You know much."
"I was once a knight on this planet," said Saturnial, a haunted look in his eyes. "I know what has been passed down to me from my father, and his father before him."
"Uncle!" shouted Sailor Titan running and embrasing her uncle.
The hugged a long moment and then Saturnial held her back arms lake and examined her with pride.
"So my darling niece is carrying on the defending business as a Sailor Gaurdian. There have not been any Gaurdian Scouts from Saturn in a millenium. I am pleased that you are ours!" he told her in praise.
"Yes." agreed Hotaru, and then whispered, "And that means our time is drawing closer.
"Uncle, our dreams.... What should we do?" asked Titan, in a forlorn voice.
Saturnial sighed, "I think I will send...."
He was cut off as the three other scouts ran in.
"Your highness, the Negaverse's army draws. We must take the army and go!" said Oberon, hurriedly.
Saturnial nodded gravely and suddenly he stood in dark armor. He was the Dark Knight, defender of Saturn.
