Noisy Games
Set of cards with animal names on in pairs or sets of three.
Large Hall (or open area outside as long as it is dark!)
Play:
Each player is given a card which they are not allowed to show anyone else. When the lights are turned off, they must find their matching pair (or three) by making the sound of their animal - no talking allowed! After a set amount of time, say 3 minutes, turn the lights back on and see who found their match. Tip: I wouldn't give them animals like giraffe - too hard to make the sound! :-)
Some possible animals: Dog, cat, mouse, sheep, cow, chicken, snake, crow, elephant, monkey, lion, dove.
I'm sure you can think of many more!
Running Games
Equipment:
None!
Play:
All the participants line up in a row on one side of the hall. They then bend down and grab their ankles firmly and try to run to the other side of the hall. Anyone who lets go of their ankles is disqualified!
Be ready with a camera! :-))
We varied this by adding various other silly activities: ankle race up the hall and crawl back; bunny hop up the hall and crab crawl back (flip over on your back and walk on all fours); Skip up the hall and frog hop back. I'm sure you can add more.... The girls thought this was a terrific game - they could have gone on all night!
Messy Games
Equipment:
2 tables
4 chairs
4 bowls of custard
4 spoons
4 blindfolds
And 4 raincoats (or possibly a garbage bag with head & arm holes cut out!)
Play:
Divide the players evenly into 2 teams. Each team selects 2 players who put on the raincoats and sit opposite each other at the tables. They are each handed a bowl of custard and a spoon. They are then blindfolded (make sure it's a good job! NO PEEKING!) They then have to try to feed the player opposite them with the custard. Their non-blindfolded team-mates are allowed to offer advice but no-one is allowed to touch anything. The first one finished is the Supreme Custard Champion!
Tips for Playing Games
To divide up a group evenly and without arguments:
We use a short game to do this. At any time during our meetings, one of the leaders will blow a whistle and hold her hand out parallel to the floor at shoulder height. This is the signal for the girls to line up in height order with the smallest under her hand. They are timed (and kidded about how slow they are!), so it's a race against the clock as well. When they are all lined up, they are numbered off depending on how many teams you need for the game (2 teams, number off 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2 down the line, 4 teams, number off 1, 2, 3, 4 down the line, etc.) This way, there is a mix of sizes, ages and capabilities in each team and the littlest ones can get to be team leaders. Our girls accept that "This is the way things are done at Guides" and it has solved any problems we might have had with girls only wanting to partner their best friends etc....
